Thousands of photos are gathering dust on hard drives. Landscapes, portraits, reports, architectural masterpieces, random shots caught during travels — a whole fortune in numbers that is just waiting to be noticed and paid for. The question “where to sell photos” torments everyone who has ever tried to monetize their hobby. The answer exists, and it is not limited to just “upload to Shutterstock”. There are many real ways: from global giants to your own online stores. The main thing is to do it legally, understanding the rules of the game, types of licenses, and requirements for copyright. This article is a guide to the international photography market, where your talent can turn into a stable income.

Stock photo sites: passive income without washing dishes

Let’s start with the classics that really feed thousands of photographers around the world. Microstocks are banks of images where buyers (designers, bloggers, marketers) download your photos for money, and you get a percentage. The main plus: once you upload, you get paid for years. The minus: fierce competition. But if you know which topics are currently in top, you can break through quickly.

The largest international platforms offer different conditions for authors. Shutterstock is considered the master of microstocks: it pays steadily, but the withdrawal threshold for beginners is $35. Royalties start from 15–40 cents per download and increase with the volume of sales. Adobe Stock is convenient due to integration with Photoshop and Lightroom — you can upload photos directly from the editor. The platform pays 33% of each sale, and the withdrawal threshold is $25. Both platforms are a base for entering the Western audience.

Alamy stands out among competitors for higher prices for individual images. Beginners here receive 40% commission, but if your annual income falls below $250, the rate drops to 20%. 500px offers the highest rate among these platforms — exclusive authors earn 60% of sales through a partnership with Getty Images. However, it should be considered that prices are controlled by partners, and transparency in this matter is limited. iStock, another giant, also belongs to the leaders.

Stock photography is unlikely to replace the main income — platforms are overloaded, and download rates are low. Most experienced authors consider this as a slowly growing additional source, not the main one. However, one quality shot can be sold and bring in income for years.

Premium and editorial stocks: fewer sales, higher price

Not all stocks work on the model “more and cheaper”. There is a segment of “macrostocks” or platforms with managed rights (Rights-Managed). Here you will make fewer sales, but the price for one license can be hundreds of times higher. One such contract can bring in more than a hundred microstock uploads.

Such platforms include Getty Images (which also owns iStock), Stocksy, and Westend61. The quality requirements here are stricter, and the entry threshold is higher, but the reward is proportional. Especially valued are editorial shots — photos capturing real events, news, historical places, and significant objects. Such images are sold under an editorial license and do not require releases from the depicted people or owners. However, they cannot be used in advertising or commercial campaigns — only for informational, educational, and news purposes.

Direct sales: your own store with maximum margin

If you don’t want to give a lion’s share of your income to an agency, there is a way with a higher margin — creating your own store. Platforms like Picfair, SmugMug, Zenfolio, and PhotoShelter allow you to sell photos under your brand and keep much more money with each sale. You get a professional portfolio and an integrated store.

But there is a flip side to this: you will have to attract traffic yourself. Without an audience that you gather in social networks or through a blog, there will be no sales. But you completely control the prices, assortment, and brand. This is an excellent option for landscape, travel, and lifestyle photography, where visual impact is important.

An alternative approach is print-on-demand. Platforms like Fine Art America take on production and delivery: you upload a photo, set a markup, and they print your shot on canvas, metal, paper, and send it to the buyer. This is almost passive income with minimal effort.
