On September 12, 2009, the famous sinologist Yakov Mikhailovich Berger, Doctor of Historical Sciences, celebrated his 80th birthday.
By his own admission, he did not intend to be a Sinologist at all, but dreamed of studying mathematics, but life circumstances ordered otherwise. After perfectly passing one required (as a silver medalist) exam at the Institute of Oriental Studies, J. M. Berger had to stubbornly defend (in response to persistent persuasions to take away the documents) his right to study at the Moscow Art Institute, which he nevertheless successfully graduated with a red diploma in 1952. They didn't accept him for graduate school (they gave him a B in Marxism), but they offered him to go God knows where as an English teacher. For a year and a half, Yakov Mikhailovich made odd jobs: translations, abstracts in VINITI of works by Chinese scientists in mathematics, biology and other natural sciences, for which he mastered the terms and concepts necessary for high-quality performance of this work in the Lenin Library. Having started working at the Institute of Geography with translations of Chinese materials for a collective monograph, J. M. Berger soon begins writing articles, working with Chinese delegations, and participating in scientific conferences. In 1957, at the suggestion of the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors. the director of the Institute, E. M. Murzaev (whom Yakov Mikhailovich still remembers as a great scientist and a wonderful person), he goes to Xinjiang as part of a Sino-Soviet complex expedition, which became a great professional school for him.
In 1962, J. M. Berger defended his thesis for the degree of Candidate of Geographical Sciences on the topic "Economic and geographical characteristics of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China".
In 1965, Berger moved to the Department of History, aimed at studying modern China, created by the decision of the Central Committee of the CPSU and working for the apparatus of this structure, but formally listed at the Institute of Economics of the World Socialist System of the USSR Academy of Sciences. A year later, this structure was reorganized into the Institute of the Far East of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and Y. M. Berger became one of its leading employees. When J. M. Berger was the head of the information sector of the IDV, a system of information publications was created: two newsletters were published almost regularly (one for current information, the second for analytical information). As Head of the General Problems Sector, Yakov Mikhailovich actively participated in the preparation of a number of analytical reports and notes for policy makers. The height of the" cultural revolution", the peak of tense relations with China, up to the incidents at the border, the intensity of mutual accusations in the polemic between the CPSU and the CCP required considerable intellectual activity, which also involved processing incoming new information on events in China. It can be said that simultaneously with the solution of ideological problems in IDV, the formation of a domestic school of analysis of modern China was taking place. And in this process, there is a very noticeable share of J. M. Berger's activity. Among the results of J. M. Berger's research at this stage, we should mention his monograph "Social Processes in the modern Chinese village", published in 1989 as a result of his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences, defended in 1987.
In the 1970s and 1980s, J. M. Berger took an active part in creating a new information field in the USSR. Under his editorship, INION published for the first time in Russian translations of a number of the most important works of such Western thinkers as M. Weber, K. Jaspers, K. Mannheim, R. Aron and others, as well as a series of scientific and analytical collections " Transition to the market in China. Society, Politics, Economy", "Transition to the Market: legacy of the past and breakthrough to the future", "China from a closed society to an open world". According to him, working at INION enriched him not only with new knowledge, which previously seemed far from his main profession, but, as it turned out later,
It gave some additional impetus to professional studies, which during this period were associated with the modernization processes in the PRC and articles on the results of which were published in the journals "Problems of the Far East", "Polis" and a number of others.
Since 1993, J. M. Berger has been Deputy Editor-in-chief of the journal "Problems of the Far East" and oversees publications on socio-economic issues. In the 1990s, having paid tribute to many social initiatives, since 1995 J. M. Berger has been concurrently becoming the director of the higher Education program of the Open Society Institute. And in 2000. he returns to the Institute of the Far East as chief researcher, and the main topic of his research interests is the interaction and interrelation of the economy and the social sphere.
For his 80th birthday, J. M. Berger prepared a voluminous, well-founded work "China's Economic Strategy".
The Department of China and the Directorate of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the editorial board and editorial board of the journal "Vostok (Oriens)" cordially congratulate the hero of the day.
