The German invasion of Poland marked the beginning of the bloodiest war of the 20th century - the Second World War. On September 1, Hitler addressed the German soldiers with the following words: "The Polish state has refused a peaceful settlement of the conflict, as I proposed to do, and has taken up arms ... Several violations of the border, which are unbearable for a great state, prove that Poland does not intend to respect the frontiers of the Reich. To stop this madness, I have no other choice but to oppose force from now on." On September 1, at 04:30, German aircraft bombed airfields, communication centers, economic and administrative centers of Poland. And at 4 hours 45 minutes, the battleship "Schleswig-Holstein" ("Schleswig-Holstein"), which arrived in the Gdansk Bay in advance, opened fire from artillery pieces (four 280-mm cannons, ten 150-mm and four 88-mm guns) in the barracks and warehouses of the suburb of Westerplatte. The ground forces of Germany invaded Poland from the north, from the west and from the south. Germany carried out a massive attack along the entire perimeter of the state borders of Poland. Thus began the war, which grew into a world war, covering 19 states in Europe, 10 in Asia, 11 in Africa and 4 in America.
